AutoCAD is used to create vector-based graphics. This means that graphics can be scaled to any size without loss of detail. Most AutoCAD graphics use three types of lines: vectors, polylines, and splines.
AutoCAD includes several drawing tools, including crosshairs, dimensioning tools, measurement tools, and text and annotations tools. It can be used as a drafting application for sketching and creating engineering drawings, or as a more complex model-making application for computer-aided architectural design.
AutoCAD also includes a facility for rendering raster images. This allows the 2D image to be inserted into the 3D workspace of a computer model.
History
AutoCAD was created by a small team of programmers at the Media Research Center in Bellevue, Washington. The company, which was known as Applied Visual Technology (AVT), was launched on December 1, 1982, with the first version of AutoCAD. The $3,000 CAD software cost more than a car at the time, making it one of the world’s most expensive software applications. In the 1990s, autoCAD became available on a wide range of personal computers and mainframe computers, including personal computers running Windows, Unix, and Macintosh OS operating systems, and on mainframe computers running Microsoft Windows.
AutoCAD is known for its level of customization. The application is available with over a dozen different skins, and many other features can be turned on or off, or changed by the user, in any combination.
Features
As of Release 2018, AutoCAD offers more than 15,000 commands, with many commands having customizable shortcut keys. Some command buttons have to be pressed and held down in order to activate certain functions.
The most significant feature of AutoCAD is its capacity to display and edit vector graphics. Vector graphics are made up of lines, arcs, and splines. An example of a vector graphic is shown in the figure below. Vector graphics are maintained in the software as an electronic database. Any change made to the database is automatically applied to all existing graphics.

Silva argues that the FCC’s move is “another in a series of overt violations” of its public interest obligations.
“Free Press and our attorneys at the Electronic Frontier Foundation are asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to order the Federal Communications Commission to get out of the business of censoring the internet,” he said.
Silva filed the lawsuit against the FCC earlier this month on behalf of Free Press, a nonprofit organization that advocates for a more open and democratic internet.
The FCC’s “policy of deliberate and discriminatory censorship denies a free and open internet to millions of Americans,” Silva wrote.
