Photoshop is a graphics-editor program, so if you are looking for a simple paint program or something similar, this may not be the right tool for the job.

The basics

Learn to use the standard tools

If you are new to editing digital images, Photoshop can be a bit overwhelming, but all the basic tools are easy to understand and easy to use. Here’s a brief tutorial to help you to create your first image in Photoshop.

1. Choose File⇒Open, locate your image file, and open it, or open another image that you want to use. A standard image will open in Photoshop; JPEG files are best.

2. Choose Layer⇒New⇒Layer to start a new image with a new layer. (See the upcoming section “Creating layers.”)

3. If the Layer Options palette is open, click OK to accept the defaults. You have a white image.

4. Choose the Brush tool, and paint or grab the Brush Tool icon and drag to create a spot of color in the image.

5. If you are using a new file, you need to let Photoshop know that you want to use a new file. To do so, choose Edit⇒Preferences⇒General and click OK.

7. To make a copy of your image, choose Edit⇒Copy⇒Duplicate Layer to create a duplicate layer.

8. Select the duplicate layer and choose Edit⇒Resize⇒Crop. Choose from the Crop drop-down list to crop it or use the slider at the bottom of the Crop thumbnail to adjust the size of your image by using the Crop Tools Options Bar (refer to Figure 6-3).

9. Choose the Ellipse Tool, hold the Shift key to constrain it to a circle, and click and drag in the image to draw a new shape.

You can select the path with the Ellipse tool by drawing in a clockwise direction. Follow the path with the points to create the shape.

You can create text using the type tool or place text directly into the image by selecting the Type tool and typing. Both types of text are covered in later sections of this chapter.

The Photoshop Crop Tools options bar is easy to use. Click on the Crop Tools tab to expand it. Choose Crop from the drop-down list.

Passing a value to a function without using global variables in python

I am trying to pass a value from a function to another function, but I am getting an error about how to set the value for other functions. The code goes like:
def createEID(input):
#Do something with input
return input

def createEID2(input):
input = createEID(input)
#Do something with input
return input

input = ‘abcdef’

returnValue = createEID2(input)

And the error that I am getting is:
in createEID2(input)
2 def createEID2(input):
3 input = createEID(input)
—-> 4 #Do something with input
5 return input

TypeError: createEID() missing 1 required positional argument: ‘input’

Can someone point out the mistake I am doing?

You are declaring input inside the function, so you are losing access to it outside. Move the input =… line to global scope and you are good.
def createEID(input):
#Do something with input
return input

def createEID2(input):
global input
input = createEID(input)
#Do something with input
return input

input = ‘abcdef’

returnValue = createEID2(input)

What’s New in the?

A research team from the University of Adelaide has successfully grown and tested fuel-efficient, next-generation hydrogen fuel cells.

The project has been led by the AMRC’s Dr Lina Sharma and Dr Corinne Jansen from the Material Characterisation and Development Group within the School of Chemistry and the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Projects funding program.

Dr Sharma said many materials in next-generation batteries and fuel cells were becoming increasingly expensive due to the complex nature of the technology.

“This work is an important step towards our ability to produce flexible, lightweight hydrogen fuel cells without the need for lithium ions,” Dr Sharma said.

“It also provides a general approach to make these materials using simple, inexpensive and readily available starting materials, so they can be widely produced and distributed.”

Dr Sharma and Dr Jansen have produced a high-quality porous metal-organic framework, which they say can be a suitable catalyst to support hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions, in addition to being a lightweight, robust material.

Hydrogen is regarded as one of the most sustainable fuels on the market and used in cars, buses and appliances. However, its use is mostly limited because of the high cost of storing it or the energy consumed to produce it.

A second layer, which was added to the first, allowed the team to control the range of the material by tuning the pore size and hydrophobicity.

“This tuning allowed us to get one material that functioned well when stored as a gas and another that performed well when stored as a liquid,” Dr Sharma said.

The material can be tuned to work at different temperatures and humidity.

“By testing the material in 50 per cent humidity, we were also able to test the material under a condition that they will probably encounter in a fuel cell.”

Dr Sharma and Dr Jansen collaborated with the AMRC’s Dr Yong Liu to demonstrate the feasibility of the material.

“We are really pleased to have our team come together to generate the material and we hope the AMRC contributes to the next generation of batteries and fuel cells,” Dr Sharma said.

It is the first time researchers from the AMRC and the University of Adelaide have collaborated to create such a hybrid material.
